STATE OF EMERGENCY DUE TO FEDERAL EXPRESS JET CRASH CLOSING AIRPORT IN
TALLAHASSEE; ASKS GOVERNOR TO EXERCISE HIS EMERGENCY POWERS TO EXTEND
QUALIFICATION DEADLINE UNTIL NOON ON MONDAY, JULY 29, 2002
Addressing the emergency situation
that the tragic crash of a Federal Express jet closing the airport in
Tallahassee early Friday morning poses to candidates who, as a result,
could be prevented from meeting the noon today qualifying deadline,
Secretary of State Katherine Harris sent the attached letter to Governor
Jeb Bush from her office in Tallahassee. Through that letter, Secretary
Harris has called upon Governor Bush to declare a state of emergency and
to use his powers pursuant to such a declaration to extend the
qualifying deadline for all candidates for all offices who are required
by law to file qualifying documents and fees in the office of the
Division of Elections in Tallahassee until noon
on Monday, July 29, 2002.
