Statement by Associated Industries of Florida President Barney Bishop
Regarding HB 733

March 14, 2007

TALLAHASSEE —“Florida’s business community refuses to stand by idly while the trial lawyers again attempt to strip fairness from the courts in favor of big bucks for their pockets.  House Bill 733 is just another attempt by the lawyers to make a mockery of the historic legislation passed last year, which eliminated joint and several liability and established a legal system that finally treats the people and businesses of Florida fairly.  The trial lawyers may have a different name, but they’re still singing from the same songbook.

We adamantly oppose any changes to the Fabre legal doctrine which brings real justice to the courts by allowing juries to allocate fault to every person responsible for causing harm.  This is the first round in a heavyweight bout, and we remain confident the Florida Legislature will continue to uphold current law and fairness in the courts.”
