Florida's Pandemic Readiness and Emergency Planning Conference
February 10,
2006
On February
16th, Governor Jeb Bush, U. S. Health & Human Services
Secretary Michael Leavitt and Florida Department of
Health Secretary Rony Francois, M. D. are going to
be hosting a PANDEMIC FLU SUMMIT in Tallahassee. This is a
critically important meeting for the Florida Business Community.
Why should
you take the time to attend this important event? Because national health
experts are predicting that the spread of the H5N1 bird flu is inevitable.
As you know it began in the Far East, it recently was found to be in
Turkey and Iraq and within the past few days it has appeared in Africa
and Nigeria. Experts say that it is only a matter of time before it
reaches our shores. As of now, it clearly appears that the transmission
of the disease is only for those individuals who come in contact with
infected birds. But at some point, it is predicted that the flu will
mutate enough that it will be transmitted from one person to the next.
Experts are predicting that
30% of all individuals could become infected. The question is if
the business community is ready for the possibility of losing 30% of
their workforce? Understand, this also would affect all segments
of our society including law enforcement officers, fire fighters, doctors,
computer techs, armed services etc..
This Summit will help you
to comprehend the breadth and scope of this potential problem and help
you begin to become prepared to combat it and survive it. The
experts will tell us that it is not a matter of if the jump to human-to-human
contamination will occur, but simply a matter of when.
Florida is one of the few
states that Secretary Leavitt is going to be personally visiting, so
it is a great opportunity for Florida Business leaders to learn more
about this issue and how it could affect their business and employees.
