Governor Crist Calls for July Special Session
July 8, 2010

Moments ago, Governor Charlie Crist announced that he is calling a special session this month to ask legislators to consider a constitutional ban on offshore oil drilling.  The official proclamation sets the proposed dates for July 20-23rd.  In order for the amendment to be placed on the November general election ballot, it must be passed by August 4th.  During a press conference today, Governor Crist announced that Senator Alex Villalobos (R-Miami) would be the Senate sponsor of the proposed amendment.  No House sponsor was announced.  Leaders in the House have been reluctant to agree to a special session, stating the already existing law which prohibits drilling in Florida’s territorial waters.
