AIF Applauds House Judiciary Committee's Passage of Tort Reform Bill

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) today released the following statement attributed to its President & CEO Brewster Bevis regarding House Bill 837 relating to Civil Remedies by Representatives Tommy Gregory and Tom Fabricio. CS/HB 837 today passed the House Judiciary Committee, its second committee of reference.

“Tort reform is the top priority of the business community this legislative session. AIF commends House Paul Speaker Renner, Chairman Gregory and Representative Fabricio for working quickly to address this issue and thanks the members of the committee for their support today of legislation that will boldly transform Florida’s legal system and finally put a stop to lawsuit abuse in our state. For too long, unscrupulous trial attorneys have taken advantage of Florida’s current laws, filing frivolous lawsuits just to make a profit with no regard for how it hurts Florida businesses and consumers. The House’s reforms will help restore fairness in our courts and eliminate Florida’s tort tax.”

Known as “The Voice of Florida Business” in the Sunshine State, AIF has represented the principles of prosperity and free enterprise before the three branches of state government since 1920. A voluntary association of diversified businesses, AIF was created to foster an economic climate in Florida conducive to the growth, development, and welfare of industry and business and the people of the state.
