Joint Statement from Senate President John McKay and House Speaker Tom Feeney

September 11, 2001

“Today, we join the nation in expressing our sincere sadness and send our prayers to the families of the victims of this horrific tragedy.  This cowardly act of inhumanity against our country is unprecedented and we must do what we can to help our fellow Americans.

“While there has been no threat of violence directed at Florida, it is clear that we must take all precautions to protect the people and the resources of this state.  We fully support Governor Bush’s executive order to ensure that Florida is prepared to deal with any situation related to the current series of events.

“As the elected leaders of the Florida Legislature, we urge all of our fellow legislators to provide any support necessary to help their federal, state and local officials to implement this emergency management plan.  We ask that our colleagues do their best to show that the business of Florida will continue and remain available to their constituents as they would for any other day.

“The Florida Legislature will postpone all committee meetings for the remainder of this week and will make up any work during the next scheduled committee meetings in October.  Pending further notice, Senate and House staff are asked to return to work at the Capitol tomorrow.  Both of us will remain in our respective offices in Tallahassee continuing the business of the state.”

“Again, we express our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the victims and their families.”
