AIF Lauds Governor DeSantis' Signing of Landmark Legislation to End Lawsuit Abuse

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) today released the following statement attributed to its President & CEO Brewster Bevis regarding House Bill 837 relating to Civil Remedies, which has been signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis.

“AIF, and Florida’s entire business community, is immensely grateful to Governor DeSantis for acting so swiftly to sign this landmark legislation into law and finally begin putting an end to lawsuit abuse in the Sunshine State.

“Florida’s difficult legal climate has plagued businesses in our state for too long and was holding our economy back from achieving even greater prosperity. Thanks to the bold leadership of the governor, House Speaker Paul Renner, and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo balance will once again be restored to the legal system and billboard lawyers will no longer be allowed to get away with abusing it for their own benefit.

“AIF would also like to thank the bill sponsors that championed this important legislation this session – Senator Travis Hutson and Representatives Tommy Gregory and Tom Fabricio – for their thoughtful handling of the issue and for ensuring fair and balanced reforms.

“For too many years, Florida businesses and consumers have been forced to pay the tort tax, but with his signature today, Governor DeSantis has signaled enough is enough. The substantial reforms that are now law will make significant progress toward ensuring the money earned by hardworking businesses and consumers stays in their pockets – not in the pockets of billboard lawyers.”

Known as “The Voice of Florida Business” in the Sunshine State, AIF has represented the principles of prosperity and free enterprise before the three branches of state government since 1920. A voluntary association of diversified businesses, AIF was created to foster an economic climate in Florida conducive to the growth, development, and welfare of industry and business and the people of the state.
